Sustainable Building Solutions to Green Revolution in Construction Industry
In a conversation with Harshil Shailesh Patel (Director-Aaryaneev Developers), a thought leader in sustainable architecture, we explore how double-glazed windows, cavity walls, water-saving technologies, and VRF HVAC systems are transforming modern construction.
With global warming and environmental degradation at the forefront of global concerns, innovations in sustainable building materials are paving the way to a greener future. According to Harshil Patel, these advancements are not just trends—they're essential to a sustainable future. "Incorporating energy-efficient solutions in buildings isn't a luxury anymore; it's a responsibility," Harshil Patel shared in a recent interview.
Double-Glazed Windows: A Solution for Energy Efficiency
One of the most impactful innovations in recent years has been the adoption of double-glazed windows. "They reduce heat loss by up to 30%," said Harshil Patel. This reduction is not only financially beneficial, cutting down electricity bills, but also significantly decreases a building’s carbon footprint. "With an estimated 700 kg reduction in carbon emissions per year per household, double-glazing is a game-changer," they explained.Double-glazed windows offer enhanced insulation by isolating indoor temperatures from the external environment, thus reducing reliance on artificial heating and cooling. "The R-value, which measures resistance to energy transfer, is much higher in these windows than in single-glazed ones, which means less energy is needed to maintain comfort indoors."
Cavity Walls: Multi-functional and Eco-Friendly
While double glazing focuses on windows, cavity walls address the larger structure of a building. "[Cavity walls] not only provide thermal insulation but also contribute to sound and moisture control". These walls consist of two masonry layers separated by an insulated cavity, which can range between 4 and 10 cm.
The benefits extend beyond insulation. "Cavity walls add structural stability, reduce noise transmission, and improve fire resistance—making them suitable for both residential and commercial properties," they explained. Additionally, this construction style is lighter, reducing foundation load, which translates into cost savings.
TOTO Water-Saving Technology: Critical in Water-Scarce Regions
In regions like India, where water conservation is crucial, TOTO’s advanced water-saving technologies offer an environmentally friendly solution. "[TOTO’s dual-flush system] allows users to select a 4.8-liter full flush or a 3-liter partial flush," H.S PATEL said, noting that the technology could save households 5 to 7 liters per flush compared to traditional systems.
Innovative designs like the Tornado Flush ensure effective cleaning with less water, further
reducing water consumption. “[These systems] can be particularly beneficial in water-stressed areas, where every liter saved counts,” they added.
VRF HVAC Systems: A New Era of Climate Control
Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) HVAC systems are the latest in efficient climate control, particularly in large, multi-zone buildings. “[VRF systems] adjust based on real-time temperature feedback, maintaining consistent comfort with minimal energy,” H.S Patel- explained. The zoned approach allows building occupants to set individual temperatures for different areas, leading to optimized energy use. "This level of control means that a VRF HVAC system operates only as much as needed," they added. The result is reduced operational as the interview concluded, H.S. PATEL emphasized that sustainable building practices are no longer frequency and lower energy consumption, which not only conserves energy but also cuts costs in the long run.
Optional. “These technologies aren’t just about environmental responsibility; they’re practical solutions that enhance comfort and efficiency,” they said. With each innovation, the construction industry takes a step closer to a greener, more sustainable future.
Aaryaneev Developers is committed to promoting sustainable construction practices through our focus on green building designs. In our ongoing project, VIBGYOR at Prahlad nagar – Satellite, Ahmedabad, we are incorporating several eco-friendly features, including:
- DGU Glasses (Double Glazed Unit): These help with thermal insulation, reducing energy consumption for heating and cooling.
- TOTO Sanitary Ware: Known for water-saving technologies, ensuring efficient water usage and contributing to sustainability.
- VRV Systems: These energy-efficient systems consume less power compared to traditional HVAC solutions, further enhancing the building's energy
By integrating these green technologies, we aim to create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly living and working space for the future.
