Datia Bypoll Result: How BJP Lost Narottam Mishra's Stronghold and Congress Secured a Key Victory

The Datia Assembly bypoll has emerged as one of the most politically significant contests in Madhya Pradesh, despite involving just a single seat. While the result does not affect the BJP government's majority in the 230-member Assembly, it has raised serious questions about the party's internal unity and candidate selection.

The Congress, on the other hand, has received a much-needed boost after struggling in recent Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. The victory is being seen as a sign that the party's organisational changes and grassroots strategy may be beginning to produce results.

BJP's Candidate Change Changed the Political Equation

The bypoll became highly sensitive after the BJP decided not to field former Home Minister Dr Narottam Mishra, who had represented Datia for years.

Instead, the party nominated Ashutosh Tiwari, a move that surprised many local workers. Narottam Mishra had already started preparing for the election after former Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti lost his Assembly membership following his conviction in an economic fraud case. He had even intensified public outreach and purchased his nomination papers before the BJP announced its final candidate.

The unexpected decision reportedly upset a section of party workers and supporters, creating dissatisfaction within the local organisation.

Internal Discontent Hurt BJP's Campaign

Although Dr Narottam Mishra actively campaigned for Ashutosh Tiwari after the party announced his name, many local supporters reportedly remained unhappy with the ticket distribution.

Senior BJP leaders, including Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda, state BJP president Hemant Khandelwal, and several ministers addressed public meetings during the campaign.

Despite the high-profile campaign, the party struggled to convert organisational strength into votes. Political observers believe internal dissatisfaction affected voter mobilisation and reduced turnout in several areas.

Congress Focused on Local Issues and Social Equations

Congress leaders adopted a different campaign strategy by focusing on caste equations, local leadership and booth-level management.

The party appointed former minister Priyavrat Singh and OBC Congress state president Siddharth Kushwaha to oversee the campaign. Former minister Jaivardhan Singh also visited the constituency to assess the ground situation before the candidate was finalised.

After former MLA Rajendra Bharti declined to contest due to health reasons, the Congress selected former MLA Ghanshyam Singh as its candidate. Party leaders managed to resolve internal differences after the announcement, helping the campaign remain largely united.

Organisational Changes Worked in Congress' Favour

Congress leaders believe the Datia victory reflects the organisational reforms introduced in Madhya Pradesh over the past year.

The party has been trying to rebuild its structure after consecutive electoral defeats by promoting new leadership. Under state president Jitu Patwari and Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar, Congress has focused on strengthening district units, appointing local leaders based on worker feedback, and improving coordination at the grassroots level.

Senior leaders, including Digvijaya Singh, Ajay Singh, Sachin Yadav, Kamleshwar Patel, PC Sharma and several others, remained actively involved throughout the campaign, sending a message of unity to party workers.

Datia Result Could Shape Future Political Strategy

Political analysts believe the Datia bypoll result carries significance beyond a single Assembly seat.

For the BJP, the outcome has highlighted the challenges of internal coordination and candidate selection in politically sensitive constituencies. The party may now review reports of alleged internal sabotage before future elections.

For Congress, the victory has boosted worker morale and strengthened confidence ahead of the proposed urban local body elections in 2027 and the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections expected in 2028.

The Datia bypoll has shown that local organisational strength, candidate selection and worker unity can play a decisive role, even when major political leaders campaign extensively.
