Rajasthan Farmer Loses Rs 5 Lakh After Termites Destroy Cash Buried in Farm

A farmer in Rajasthan's Balotra district has reportedly lost Rs 5 lakh after the cash he had secretly buried in his farmland was destroyed by termites.

The farmer, identified as Mangilal Meghwal from Newai village near Pachpadra, had received the money after selling a piece of land nearly a year ago. Worried that the cash could be stolen or spent by his sons, he decided to keep it hidden in his field instead of depositing it in a bank.

Farmer Buried Cash Without Telling Family

Mangilal reportedly put the Rs 5 lakh in a plastic bag and buried it inside a pit on his farmland.

He did not inform his wife or children about the location of the money. His plan was to keep the cash safe and use it later when required.

However, the situation took an unexpected turn when he needed money to construct a room on the farm.

When the farmer returned to collect the cash, he could not remember the exact location where he had buried it.

Search Across 10-Bigha Field Fails

Mangilal searched his farmland extensively but could not locate the hidden money.

His field reportedly covers around 10 bighas, making the search even more difficult. After failing to find the cash, he eventually told his family about the money he had buried.

His family members initially found the claim difficult to believe. However, they later joined him in searching the field for the missing cash.

Despite their efforts, the money could not be located for several months.

Damaged Cash Found During Monsoon

Nearly a year after the money was buried, the family reportedly came across a damaged bag in the field during the monsoon season.

When they opened it, they discovered the missing cash. However, the notes had been badly damaged by termites.

Most of the Rs 500 currency notes were reportedly torn and destroyed, leaving the family with little hope of recovering the full amount.

Family Approaches SBI for Help

After finding the damaged currency, the family approached a State Bank of India branch in Pachpadra in the hope that the notes could be exchanged.

However, bank officials reportedly declined to accept the severely damaged currency.

The family later approached the SBI's main branch in Balotra, but they reportedly received a similar response there as well.

Farmer's Decision Turns Into Major Financial Loss

The farmer had hidden the money because he wanted to protect his savings from theft and prevent it from being spent within the family.

However, forgetting the location of the cash and leaving it underground for nearly a year resulted in the destruction of most of the money.

The incident has reportedly left the family distressed, with Mangilal's wife and son questioning his decision to hide the money instead of keeping it in a bank account.

The case serves as an unusual reminder of the risks involved in keeping large amounts of cash outside secure financial institutions.
