Tata Trusts Begin Search for N Chandrasekaran's Tata Sons Successor
Tata Trusts begin the process to select N Chandrasekaran’s successor as Tata Sons chairman after he declines a third term.
The Tata group has begun the process of identifying a successor to N Chandrasekaran as Chairman of Tata Sons, setting the stage for a leadership transition at one of India’s most prominent business groups. The development comes a day after Chandrasekaran announced that he would not seek a third term as chairman.
The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT), one of the key entities within the Tata Trusts, said on Thursday that its trustees had passed a resolution to initiate the formation of a selection committee. The committee will be responsible for recommending a candidate for the position of Chairman of the Tata Sons board.
Tata Trusts Start Succession Process
The Tata Trusts said the SDTT respected Chandrasekaran’s decision not to offer himself for reappointment and expressed appreciation for his leadership of Tata Sons and the wider Tata group.
The Trust specifically highlighted his contribution during a period marked by significant change, expansion and transformation across the group.
According to the statement, the SDTT trustees have decided to begin the process of setting up a selection committee at the earliest. The committee will be constituted in accordance with the Articles of Association of Tata Sons and will recommend a candidate for appointment as the company’s next board chairman.
Chandrasekaran to Step Down After Two Terms
The succession process follows Chandrasekaran’s announcement on Wednesday that he would not seek reappointment for a third term.
Chandrasekaran, who has led Tata Sons for nearly a decade, said the decision came amid a lack of unanimity within the board over his continuation. He also stressed the importance of bringing clarity to the leadership question at the earliest.
His decision now puts the Tata Trusts and Tata Sons at the centre of a closely watched succession process.
Noel Tata to Play Key Role
Noel Tata, who became Chairman of the Tata Trusts after the death of his half-brother Ratan Tata, also heads the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust.
The Tata Trusts collectively hold nearly two-thirds of Tata Sons, giving them a significant role in the process of selecting the next chairman.
The Trusts said they would extend their full support to Tata Sons to ensure a smooth, timely and orderly leadership transition while keeping the long-term interests and values of the Tata group in focus.
What Happens Next?
The immediate priority will be the formation of the selection committee and the identification of potential candidates for the top position.
Once the committee recommends a candidate, the appointment process will move forward in accordance with the governance framework of Tata Sons.
With Chandrasekaran deciding against a third term, the upcoming selection will mark an important leadership transition for the Tata group after years of growth and restructuring under his stewardship.
