BJP Targets Rahul Gandhi Over Monsoon Session Disruptions, Says ‘One Leader’s Ego’ Derailled Parliament

The Monsoon Session of Parliament ended on Thursday with the Lok Sabha being adjourned sine die, but the political confrontation between the government and the Opposition showed little sign of easing. The BJP has now put the blame for the repeated disruptions squarely on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of shifting his demands and refusing opportunities for debate.

Addressing a press conference on the final day of the session, senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad alleged that the Opposition repeatedly prevented Parliament from functioning despite the government's willingness to discuss issues raised by its members.

Prasad described the session as having been derailed by what he called “one leader’s ego, indiscipline and insolence” and directly targeted Rahul Gandhi over the Congress-led Opposition's approach to parliamentary proceedings.

BJP says Rahul Gandhi kept changing his demands

According to Prasad, the Opposition's demands changed several times during the Monsoon Session. He cited issues including NEET, protests outside the Prime Minister's residence, demands for the Education Minister's resignation and calls for answers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The BJP leader also referred to the Opposition's demand for a response from Home Minister Amit Shah over alleged police action during protests.

Prasad argued that the government had offered to hold a detailed discussion on the matter. He said Shah had made it clear that he was prepared to participate in a debate and respond to the Opposition's allegations point by point.

Despite that offer, Prasad claimed, the Opposition continued to prevent the House from functioning.

BJP questions Rahul Gandhi’s protest outside PM residence

Prasad also criticised Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders for staging a protest outside the Prime Minister's residence.

He questioned whether Gandhi had considered the security arrangements and protocol associated with the Prime Minister's residence before taking part in the demonstration.

According to Prasad, senior government officials, including the Home Secretary and Cabinet Secretary, along with Minister of State in the PMO Jitendra Singh, met the protesters and conveyed that the government was prepared to engage in discussions.

However, Prasad claimed the Opposition then shifted its demand from discussion to the resignation of the concerned minister.

Government cites steps taken on NEET issue

The BJP leader also defended the government's handling of the NEET-related concerns raised by the Opposition.

Prasad said the government had taken several measures, including introducing a stringent law, providing for fast-track courts and ensuring time-bound trials in cases related to examination irregularities.

He further said that a high-powered committee was working to address the network allegedly involved in paper leaks.

BJP reiterates stand on Bihar protest firing allegation

Prasad also addressed allegations surrounding firing during a protest in Bihar. He reiterated the government's position that no shots had been fired.

He argued that the Opposition could have sought clarification directly from the Home Minister during parliamentary proceedings had it allowed the House to function.

With the Monsoon Session now over, the BJP and Congress remain sharply divided over the handling of protests, examination-related concerns and other issues that dominated the proceedings. The final day therefore ended not with a political resolution, but with another round of accusations over who was responsible for Parliament's repeated disruptions.
