UP Assembly Monsoon Session Ends Early After Samajwadi Party Protest

The UP Assembly Monsoon Session ended a day ahead of schedule after a bitter confrontation between the ruling BJP government and the Samajwadi Party over continuous protests inside the House. The repeated disruptions forced Speaker Satish Mahana to adjourn the Assembly indefinitely on Wednesday.

The session was originally scheduled to continue until Thursday, August 6. However, the House remained disrupted for two consecutive days as Samajwadi Party MLAs raised slogans and demanded discussions on issues they described as being of public importance.

CM Yogi Accuses Opposition of Blocking House Business

After the Assembly was adjourned, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath blamed the Samajwadi Party for preventing the House from functioning. He said the opposition deliberately disrupted proceedings and stopped important legislative discussions from taking place.

The Chief Minister stated that the government had presented a supplementary budget of more than ₹59,000 crore to support welfare schemes and development projects across Uttar Pradesh. According to him, repeated protests prevented a detailed debate on these proposals.

Speaker Satish Mahana Ends the Session

Speaker Satish Mahana announced the indefinite adjournment after repeated disruptions failed to stop despite multiple warnings. He expressed disappointment over the conduct of several legislators and became emotional while addressing the Assembly.

Mahana also criticized members for recording and sharing photographs and videos from inside the House on social media despite clear instructions prohibiting such activities. He said the incident was unfortunate and indicated he would reflect on whether he should continue in the role of Speaker.

Why the Samajwadi Party Was Protesting

The protests began after Samajwadi Party legislators demanded a discussion on the alleged theft of donations at the Ram Temple. The confrontation intensified following the suspension of SP MLA Sachin Yadav.

Yadav was suspended for the remainder of the session after displaying a poster inside the Assembly despite repeated instructions from the Speaker to remove it. Assembly marshals later escorted him out of the House, leading to pushing and jostling between marshals and opposition MLAs.

Protests Continued on Wednesday

The protests resumed on Wednesday with greater intensity. Samajwadi Party MLAs entered the Assembly carrying posters and raising slogans both inside and outside the House.

Speaker Satish Mahana briefly adjourned proceedings twice in an effort to restore order. As the disruptions continued, he finally adjourned the House indefinitely, bringing the UP Assembly Monsoon Session to an end one day before its scheduled conclusion.

Supplementary Budget Cleared Despite Disruptions

Although the House witnessed repeated protests, the Assembly passed the supplementary budget. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the funds would be used for welfare programmes, including support for Anganwadi workers, government cooks, village chowkidars, pension beneficiaries, women, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.

Political Battle Set to Continue

The early end of the session has intensified the political rivalry between the BJP and the Samajwadi Party. While the BJP has accused the opposition of obstructing legislative business, the Samajwadi Party maintains that it was raising issues that directly affect the people of Uttar Pradesh. The confrontation is expected to remain a major political issue in the state in the coming days.
